Captain George Freeman on the FreeStyle Reports: Finally fishing! We took the boat out for a shakedown trip this morning. We started in Ludington Harbor to see if we could catch some Browns. We spent a couple hours trolling there and took 3 Browns and a good size Laker. We missed a Brown too. Three of the bites came on DW Super Slims spoons and two hit F 11 Rapalas. Two of the fish on Super Slims came on a small Slide Diver out 14 ft. with a 75 ft. lead. We were satisfied catching the Browns so we pulled lines and headed out & south to try for Lake Trout. The Trout fishing was real good. It didn’t take long to boat our four man limit. We set up in front of the Project and trolled south. Most of our fish came on wire divers fished on or near the bottom with Dreamweaver Whirly Gigs behind 8″ Chrome Spin Doctors. Our best Whirly Gig was the Chrome Blue Yellow Dot with Glow Wings, pictured below. We took three Trout on riggers. Two came on regular size DW Lemon Lime spoons 40ft. down … [Read more...]

SAGINAW BAY Fishing Report—August 15, 2017
The first week of August was pretty much a bust after a three-day Nor’easter scattered walleye all over the bay. But by Friday of last week, the fishing started to improve, each day better than the one before. Yesterday and today three-man limits of 24 walleye were pretty common with a lot of nice fish in the 20-inch class in the mix. While reports from the islands on the east side of the bay have been mixed, westside anglers are having excellent fishing, especially in the deeper water (31-33 feet). Crawler harnesses are still the main tactic. A lot of fish are suspended right now, and a trolling speed of 1.3-1.6 mph has been very productive. The best fishing has been south of Point Augres down towards Buoy One at the mouth of the Saginaw River. Anglers trolling crank baits have also been doing well, and Flicker Shad and Flicker Minnows seem to be local anglers’ preferences. However, it’s still hard to beat Storm’s Rattle Tots. Perch fishing reports are still sketchy, but from now … [Read more...]

Walleye are still scattered with a few taken North of the harbor using worm burners, Hot and Tots, and thunder sticks, mix the depth of the lures and water until you see where they are setting. We fished south today setting up in 110 feet of water. First fish came on a 200 copper with a Natural Glow Captains Choice Cut Plug. It was a good size King. Our best rod was a high wire diver out 300 with a 10″ White Slick Spin Doctor/Pickled Sunshine Dreamweaver Meat Rig. An 8″ White Crush Spin Doctor/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly stacked with a mag Fuzzy Bear Modified Blue Dolphin 110 down on an out down went twice. One hit the flasher/fly and the other the spoon. Our biggest King came on a 300 copper with an 8″ White Crush Spin Doctor/Pickled Sunshine Action Fly. SAGINAW BAY Fishing Report—July 15, 2017
The Saginaw Bay walleye bite right now is as good as it gets! Today we fished the 8-11 foot depths off the islands on the eastern side of the bay. Pulling crawler harnesses behind one ounce weights 23-27 feet back at 1.5-1.6 mph, we averaged an easy 10 fish and hour on fish that averaged 16-22 inches. A half dozen fish pushed the scales to four pounds. The action was non-stop from the time we sat down until we limited out. It has been that way since the end of June! Too much cold water has slowed the fishing in much of the deeper waters of the bay, so the key is to find water as close to 70 degrees as possible. We found 71-72 degree water and a very strong bite essentially all along the islands once inside the 15-foot contour. Deeper than that the water dropped to 69 degrees and the fish disappeared. There are countless reefs around the islands where the unsuspecting angler can suddenly find himself in three to five feet of water, so it’s critical to map out a trolling route on … [Read more...]

SAGINAW BAY FISHING REPORT—July 5, 2017
SAGINAW BAY WALLEYE fishing remains exceptional. The reason? All the west and west-southwest winds have concentrated the fish all along the eastern side of the bay. The water out of Augres all last week was 51 degrees all the way across the bay to 13-14 feet of water near the islands on the eastern side where it suddenly turned to 68-70 degrees. Anglers essentially have the majority of the bay’s walleye population concentrated in 13 feet of water or less, and it’s providing incredible fishing from south of Big Charity Island all the way down south of Essexville. The action is non-stop! What’s working? Just about everything. Hot ‘N Tots, Flicker Shads and Flicker Minnows, Husky Jerks, and Little Rippers are some of the more common crank baits. Crawler’s harnesses are deadly as well pulled behind one-ounce in-line weights or bottom bouncers. A few boats were drifting using one-ounce jigs tipped with Mister Twisters or Berkley “Gulp” Worms. It just didn’t seem to matter what an angler … [Read more...]
Lake Erie Fishing Report for 06-27-2017
Fishing for walleye has been excellent this June. Plenty of shorts and legal size walleye to be caught. We have been trolling crankbaits and crawler harnesses with success on both. Fish are everywhere in Michigan waters. The bite should last well into July. The late summer perch bite should be good because all the captains I know are catching plenty of perch while fishing for the walleyes and good size too. Captain Dan Woodward Blueline Charters www.thebluelinecharters.com Blueline Charters specializes in walleye and perch fishing in the Detroit River and on Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay. … [Read more...]
Saginaw Bay Walleye Fishing Report —June 25, 2017
The wind blows relentlessly. The thunder rolls. It rains almost daily. Some of the worst flooding since 1986 took place last week. Incredibly, it has had little effect on the Saginaw Bay walleye bite. Fishing continues to be excellent from south of Pt. Augres all the way around the bay to the “Slot” south of Sand Point. Limit catches are common whether one chooses to fish the shallow waters or the deeper walleye haunts. The bay is literally loaded with huge concentrations of walleye. Crank baits, especially Flicker Shads, spoons and crawler harness are all highly productive. Color hasn’t seemed to matter on the harnesses, but it has with the crank baits and spoons, so experimentation will be necessary with them. Last week the fish were suspending more in the deeper water, as the best bites seemed to come 10-15 feet off bottom. For us, that meant running crawler harnesses behind three-ounce weights 37-47 feet behind in-line boards while trolling at 1.3-1.5 mph (GPS … [Read more...]
