Capt. Ken Deaton of J-Lyn Charters reports from Harbor Beach:

Steelhead fishing is picking up. Fish the color lines for best results. Put out some 2, 5, 8 and 10 color lead lines on the boards, bright colors of spoons regular and magnum sizes are working best fishing North of the harbor in 85 to 110 foot of water.

Lake Trout fishing was on the slow side but since the wind switch it has been picking back up again. Fish North of the harbor using dodgers with spin and glows close to the bottom. Best colors are green with white and red, and white with pink dots. The clean spoons off the downriggers are also working well. Fish 45 foot down to the bottom for best results. Start fishing in 75 feet of water and work your way out to the deeper water of 110 to 120 feet.

Some coho and pink salmon and an occasional king salmon continue to be taken North of the harbor. Try fishing the clean spoons off the downriggers 20 to 55 feet down. Best colors have been the gold with orange color, green, and chrome with colored dots. Don’t forget to put down some dodgers or flashers with flys off the downriggers or dipsey divers as well. Start in 55 feet of water and work out till you find where they are setting. Don’t fish too deep or you will be under them, they are still coming up high.

Brown Trout will be in close to shore. Work the 40 to 60 foot of water areas South of the harbor. Body baits and clean spoons will be the lures of choice, try the perch, orange, yellow and green, and blue colors.

Bass and Pike are being taken in close to shore or inside the harbor using body baits and spoons.

Try for perch by the lighthouse or South by the cemetery using minnows in 30 to 40 feet of water. If the water is clear move deeper.

A few walleye are being taken North of the harbor near Port Hope working in close to shore, 30 to 65 feet of water. Clean small spoons or crawler harnesses should work.

Captain Ron Westrate of CoHooker Charters reports from Saugatuck:

Oceana Fly Is Hot In Saugatuck

This past week has been excellent with limit catches of 15 to 20 fish
almost every day within 2 to 4 hours. The main species has been lake
trout with a few salmon and an occasional steelhead in the creel. The
best depth continues to be 80 to 110 foot of water with the lake trout
hitting throughout the day and the most of the salmon coming early in
the morning.

The bait in the stomachs of the fish consist of all age classes of
alewife from 2 in to 6 in in length, so lures from the regular stinger
size to stingray and magnum sizes on the 300 and 400 foot copper have
produced but not one size predominates. What was consistent was the
Rapture Oceana fly. We ran this on the 450 copper behind silver
flashers, on the downriggers and dipsy divers, behind silver and white
Silver Horde metal flashers, and behind silver/green and silver blue
bubble Hot Chip flashers. We would start with a variety of flies and
spin and glows on the downriggers and dipsy divers and ultimately end up
with the Oceana on almost every set up latter in the day. It is possible
that in the green tinted water we were fishing, that other Rapture
mirage flies would also work, however we pulled the Oceana and the
Oceana glow.

I think that once the water warms a little more the lake trout will move
out of this depth and we will have to locate and target the salmon.
There were boats fishing from 70 foot out to 270 foot looking for the
silver fish and there were no concentrations of salmon reported ( at
least from the boat I talked to). The perch fishing has been very poor
with 2 to 6 perch per boat reported off of Saugatuck and Holland. The
perch report from South Haven has also been spotty at best from 40 to 80
foot of water. If anyone has information on the perch fishing, feel free
to email me so I can put this in future fishing reports.

Captain Ed Stowe of Stowaway Charters reports from Ludington:

Hola, Back from the Mayan Resort and Spa 100 miles south of Cancun. My daughter got married in a destination ceremony and Sue and I vacationed for a week. Went out on a charter and caught my first Sailfish, 9 1/2 ft and 95 lbs. Very exciting and lots of fun.

The fishing has slowed considerably in the last week. The salmon are elusive and on the smaller side. The temperature at the point is 62 on the surface and 48 down 95 ft. The fish are spread all over the water column. Meat rigs are the baits of choice, with the old Lake Trout favorites producing as well. Best fishing is from the brine well up to the three bears in from 80 ft out to the 4400 numbers. It is a bitter pill to swallow when you have to run 25 miles out to catch fish, especially with gas prices as high as they have ever been. We have to add a gas surcharge for those long runs.

Captain .Dick Rang from Lake and Stream Charters reports from Alpena:

Lake trout fishing excellent off Thunderbay Island, Alpena MI. 95 to 115 feet of water using dodgers or flashers and flies/spin glos.

Steelhead fishing picking up with mayfly hatches finally showing up (water temp or not). 3 and 5 color lead core scoring well. Something orange seems to work ( 4 steelies boated Monday on a charter).

And a few “king” salmon showing up in our area. Landed a fourteen pound “king” Monday along with some pink salmon for a very nice catch. Again lead core, 3 and 5 colors are working.

Fishing continues to improve after a couple weeks of low catches in our area. This is very normal for June. We eagerly await July and August.

We had an excellent catch today! We caught our fish in 250 ft. of water.
The guys in our area are fishing from 120 ft. out to… “as far as you are willing to go”.

We caught fish from 60 ft. down to 90 ft.
We used a real variety of baits: Mixed Veggie, and Blue and Green Dolphins were very good for us.
Our Steelhead really liked a variety of Oranges today.

We caught Coho, Kings, Steelhead, and also Lake Trout today.

Today we caught over 60 Bass we released 30 as this was more than my anglers wanted to keepThis was a great day on Lake St. Clair with the opening day of Bass season We fished the Canadain side of Lake St. Clair using artificail gumpies and tube lures We than procedded to my special perch spot using dead minnows on ice cubes. and limited out with perch 25 per angler.
