08-13-2010 Lake Erie

Captain John Giszczak of Stray Cat Charters reports from Luna Pier:

Perch fishing has been very productive despite the hot weather
Fishing has been very good early in the day around Turtle Island with many limit catchs of 8 and 9 inch perch
Limit catchs of larger perch (up to 12″) are being caught around Sputnik using emerald shiners in 20 to 23 feet of water. Drop shot rigs seem to work the best. #4 gold hooks and a 3/4 ounce sinker
Best bet is to get out there early before the heat sets in.
The Toledo water intake has also been producing limit catchs of 7 to 12 inch perch
If your willing to do some traveling and spend some time looking – the “Big Boy’s have been coming from, up on the Canada boarder near Middle Sister Island in 30 plus feet of water

Most of the bait shops have a fair supply on emerald shiners, but call ahead, some of the shops are mixing in sand shiners and chubs with the emeralds.
Ohio upped it’s limit to 30 perch per angler this season – Michigan still remains at 50 per angler

Capt. Dan Tebo of D’Ann Marie Charters reports from Grand Haven:
We are fishing from 80 ft. – 110 ft. out.
We are fishing from 60 ft. down to the bottom. The water temperatures are changing daily now and so we need to watch the temperatures to determine whether we fish out deeper or in closer. Right now, it seems each day is different in Grand Haven.
We all lost our trips Sunday due to high waves. A few boats went out and were back in within an hour or so.
We are using 250 and 300 coppers and 10 and 15 lead cores.Green and Yellow plugs are going well for us lately. .We have been getting good results with white paddles and white flies, white paddles with green flies, and blue paddles with blue flies.

Captain Ron Westrate of CoHooker Charters reports from Saugatuck:

The fishing this past week has slowed some what, however we still caught
between 7 to 12 fish per trip. The creel consisted of chinook salmon
that weighed over 20 pounds and lake trout over 12 pounds and an
occasional steelhead. The best depth was again the 80 to 90 foot depth
however by the weekend we also caught fish out to 160 foot of water.
There are some fishermen that are going out at 4 in the morning and
taking some nice fish in 50 to 60 foot of water.

Early in the week we had some good luck with 200 copper, however by the
end of the week we fished primarily 300 and 400 foot of copper with Ace
Hi plugs (glow green lightning, glow black lightning, green glow, green
glow ladderback and wonderbread). The divers are pulled at 100 and 200
foot early in the day and then lengthened out to 300 and 200 foot as it
get brighter. On the divers we are pulling echip flashers (white blue
wiggle, white glow mountain dew, green silver and white slick glow) with
Rapture flies (oceana, no see um green, green hypnotist, and last
supper). On the downriggers we are fishing near the bottom and pulling
11 in echips (white glow, white slick glow and white mountain dew) with
Rapture green flies (green hypnotist and wild fern).

With the rough water conditions on Sunday, we did not fish so it will be
interesting to see what happened to the water temperature on Monday. For
information or charter reservations, email me at

Capt. Ken Deaton of J-Lyn Charters reports from Harbor Beach:

Lake Trout are being taken in the 120 to 140 foot of water areas North of the harbor. Try using plain spoons off the downriggers or the ghost dodgers with spin and glows down on the bottom. Best colors have been glow in the dark, white with pink dots, and black.
Some nice Steelhead continue being taken in 120 to 140 feet of water using 2, 3, 5, and 10 color lead lines off the boards, or try some spoons off the monofilament line with the Offshore tadpoles and put them off the boards. Lines off the downriggers back 50 and down 60 are also working. Bright colored small Pro King lures with orange, pink, yellow with silver, and red with green are still working best.
Walleye are being taken Straight out and North of the harbor with some limits being taken on crawler harnesses, small spoons and small body baits. Try Gold, root beer, perch, purple and green with red colors. I would also suggest using spoons and body baits trolled fast to cover more ground till you find where they are setting. Try starting in 25 foot of water and work out to 60 till you see where they are.
Salmon fishing is slow but a few pinks and kings are being taken mixed in while fishing for the Lake Trout and Steelhead in the 120 to 140 foot of water areas.
Perch fishing is slow, you might try South of the harbor by the cemetery in 25 to 50 feet of water with minnows.
Bass and Pike are still being taken inside the harbor and close to shore casting small body baits and spoons.

Keep those lines tight,
Captain Ken and Captain Janice Deaton
